Quickstart

From no wallet to your first trade.

This takes you from no wallet to your first trade. The longest part is your wallet reading the chain the first time.

  1. Connect with a passkey. Press Connect wallet and pick Face ID or Touch ID. Your device makes a passkey, and the passkey opens a wallet with a Midnight account (and soon a Cardano account). There's nothing to install, no password, and nothing to write down unless you want a backup. Already use Lace or 1AM? Pick it instead. See Your passkey wallet.
  2. Let it sync. Your wallet reads the chain once to find what it holds. The account button shows Syncing and a percentage until it's done. You can browse meanwhile, but you can't send anything yet.
  3. Get NIGHT. On the Preview testnet, open Get started in the side menu and follow its link to Midnight's faucet with your address from the account menu. On mainnet, bring NIGHT from Cardano (Bring tokens to Midnight).
  4. Make DUST. Every transaction pays its fee in DUST, which NIGHT makes once it's registered. On Preview, Get started has a button for it. Registering is free, and DUST starts growing within minutes. See DUST.
  5. Get something to trade. On Preview, Claim tUSD on the same page gives you 1,000 test dollars. On mainnet, markets are priced in SHADE and USDM (Markets).
  6. Swap. Open a market from Markets, type an amount and press Swap. Your wallet proves the trade (one to four minutes in the browser), and Midnight settles it in the next block.

If your swap is queued

When someone else trades on the same side of the market while your wallet is proving, the form queues your swap instead of failing. It fills with the next batch, at your price or better, usually within a minute or two. The queue and batches explains how.

Faster proofs

Your wallet proves each transaction in the browser, which takes one to four minutes. A proof server on your own computer does it in seconds. On Preview, Get started shows how to run one, and takes its address so this browser proves with it from then on.
