DUST

Every Midnight transaction pays its fee in DUST. You don't buy DUST: NIGHT makes it. Once your NIGHT is registered, DUST builds up on its own, and each transaction spends a little.

How DUST grows

• Registered NIGHT makes DUST steadily until it holds 5 DUST for each NIGHT. Filling up from empty takes about a week, but you can spend it as soon as it starts. 100 NIGHT makes about 71 DUST a day.
• When your NIGHT moves (you sell it, send it, or put it into an order), the DUST it made starts to fade, and the NIGHT that arrives somewhere new starts making its own.
• DUST can't be sent to anyone else or traded. Each wallet makes its own.

That last point matters on Nightshade: putting NIGHT into a pool or an order moves it into a contract, so it stops making DUST for you. Keep some NIGHT in your wallet.

NIGHT on Midnight

If your NIGHT is already on Midnight, register it once and DUST starts growing within minutes. It's one free transaction. On the Preview testnet, Get started in the side menu has a button for it, and shows how many of your NIGHT coins aren't registered yet. On mainnet, register from a Midnight wallet that supports it.

NIGHT on Cardano

Registering Cardano NIGHT for DUST from Nightshade is being finished and tested now.

Most NIGHT is on Cardano, and it can make DUST on Midnight without moving. You register your Cardano address once, naming the Midnight wallet that gets the DUST. From then on, every NIGHT that arrives at that Cardano address makes DUST for your Midnight wallet.

• Registering is a Cardano transaction, so it needs a little ADA for Cardano's fee.
• It takes about 12 hours for the registration to finish on Cardano and reach Midnight. Then the DUST starts growing, at the same rate as above.
• The passkey wallet will do this for its own Cardano account, so its Cardano NIGHT makes DUST for its Midnight account.

This is the easiest way to start if you hold NIGHT on an exchange: withdraw it to your Cardano address, register once, and pay Midnight fees without bridging anything.

Out of DUST

If a transaction fails because you're out of DUST, wait a while for more to build up, or register more NIGHT. A transaction that Midnight refuses after it was sent (see How Nightshade works) may still use its DUST.
